The rest of the week proceeds in the same manner. I spend half the time in my office looking at the gossip sites to see if Jaxson was still parading around with River.

I refuse to ask him what’s going on there. Instead, I pretend to work as I search.

From across my desk, my cell phone starts to ring. Across the screen, I see that it’s Tyler. I grab it and then swipe to answer.

“Tyler. What’s going on?” I ask as I pull away from my desk and recline back in my chair.

“Not much, man, I was just calling to see what you’re up to this weekend?”

“Absolutely nothing.” I laugh at my old friend.

“Want to come out east and chill?”

No, absolutely not.

There is no way I can go out there. Not if River will be there. My desire to touch her is too intense, and I’m not sure it would be smart.

When I don’t answer right away, Tyler starts speaking again. “Come on, man, it will be like old times. No women, we can barbecue, drink beer. Chill.”

“No women? Where’s Kim?” I don’t say where’s River, but that’s really what I want to say.

“Out of town, and River’s staying at some Hamptons share house,” he says and my muscles tense. The idea of River partying at a house with Lord knows how many guys, has me irrationally jealous. But she’s not mine, and she never will be, so I push it down.

“So basically you’re bored, and have nothing better to do, so you want me to entertain you?” I joke.

“Yeah, basically. But don’t pretend you have any other plans.”

I laugh at that. Because I don’t. And the truth is, as much as I have seen Tyler these past few weeks, there has always been work or some sort of drama. It would be nice to catch up with him.

I’ve missed him.

“You know what, okay.”

“Great.”

“I’ll bring the cigars,” I add for good measure, “If you provide the scotch.”

Just like old times, before everything went to shit. It feels good to have Tyler back in my life. I understand that he felt betrayed and ended our friendship, but it still hurt.

The thing is, after my father died, and I realized how fleeting life could be, and that my own demise could be around the corner, I try not to let myself dwell on the past.

When I arrive at the house sometime later, it’s eerie how quiet it is. Tyler is off grabbing the scotch and I’m sitting outside by the pool.

It’s around eight p.m., and the sun has begun its descent, leaving the sky in brilliant shades of pink in the distance. I haven’t spent much time appreciating a sunset, but now with no one here to distract me, I take it in.

As much as I have said I hate the Hamptons, that’s not true.

I only hate my family’s house. I hate the memories it holds for me. But staying here, although only a mile up the beach, feels different.

“Glenlivet, neat,” I hear from beside me, and I pull my gaze away from the sky to see my old friend.
